9/11 Emergency Responder Packages

What happens when one of your amazing customers calls you and says “we have this special project and we need about 50,000 promotional items produced and ready for shipment in a week and a half, can you help?” Well, if you’re the Ad Specialties department at Heritage Solutions you say, “sure – no problem!!” (Then you proceed to ask all your employees to dig in their heels for the next week and a half! They love a good challenge!)

Our great partners over in Community Relations & Corporate Events at Chesapeake Energy Corporation recently had a need arise. They wanted to send 250 packages to emergency responders in their Marcellus Shale operating area to show their gratitude for all they do on a daily basis, but also to remember the 10^th Anniversary of September 11^th.

They wanted each box to be stuffed with goodies such as baseball hats, koozies, footballs, playing cards, frisbees, dominoes and flashlights that the responders would enjoy! The kit included the following thank you note:

“You put others first. We call when we need your help, and you’re the first to respond. Today, we want to put you first. On this day we remember the sacrifices made 10 years ago and the commitment you continue to make to keep our loved ones safe and our communities secure. Thank you for everything you do.”

Our ASI team got busy (when I say busy, I mean busy) they got on the phone with vendors, made calls, sent emails, got product proofs, made more calls….and a week and a half later all the product was delivered to Chesapeake for the kitting process. (Yes, we do kitting here at Heritage, but the customer wanted to be all hands on and assist in this project, it was close to their hearts…which we thought was pretty cool!)

Denise, our ASI manager, went to the clients to ensure everything was received properly and then rolled up her sleeves and stayed around to help with the kitting. It was a great team effort.

Now I’m picturing the guy from the A Team saying “I love it when a plan comes together!” The plan did come together, which makes our customer very happy…and us too!

We’ve told you before that we manage the warehousing & fulfillment for ecommerce websites, like the OU Alumni Store for instance, but even though we’ve told you that it’s inevitable that someone will say “You manage websites? I didn’t know you did that!” Well, we do. Promise. (If you don’t believe us you should come hang out some day and take a tour of our warehouse, it’s pretty amazing complete with giant tater-tots. HA, now you want to come out just to see what I mean by giant tater-tots! Well, you’re just gonna have to come out and see for yourself!)

As we roll out new merchandise on our websites we like to try to find new ways to get the word out about what we’ve got! We do things like eblasts, direct mail, fliers, online advertising, and facebook advertising…. pretty much anything we can do to notify people of the specials and new merchandise on our sites.

Last week this bad boy was emailed out to 90,000 OU alums & their closest friends!

Everyday Creativity

Yesterday several of us from our sales team at Heritage headed over to the Moore Chamber of Commerce to attend a workshop titled Everyday Creativity by DeWitt Jones, presented by Jan Astani. We had a great time looking at things in a new perspective, and thinking outside the box!

Curtis even made a friend.

(This picture is more disturbing than I realized. Sorry, and somehow me saying “you had to be there” doesn’t help much either. Oh well, you had to be there.)

Dewitt Jones is one of Americas top professional photographers. Twenty years with National Geographic, photographing stories all over the globe, has earned him the reputation as a world-class photojournalist. As a motion picture director, two of Dewitt’s films were nominated for Academy Awards.

His definition of creative is “the ability to look at the ordinary and see the extraordinary.”

Jan did a wonderful job walking our group through the 9 Steps of Creativity…
• Looking at the ordinary and seeing the extraordinary
• Every act can be a creative one
• Creativity is a matter of perspective
• There’s always more than one right answer
• Reframe problems into opportunities
• Don’t be afraid to make mistakes
• Break the pattern
• Train your technique
• You’ve got to really care

Since I don’t have the rights to use Dewitt’s material I better stop there with the descriptions and definitions…I’m sure he’d prefer you go to your own workshop and hear it for yourself. (That was my creative response, my real response here is I don’t wanna get my rear-end sued for using his stuff without permission!)

If you find a fabulous presenter (like Jan Astani) offering Everyday Creativity, I highly recommend you attend. It was very eye opening.

I will leave you with one thought that I gleaned from the presentation. The quote “put yourself in the place of most potential” really got me thinking. Are you putting yourself and your business in the place of most potential? Are you reaching out to your clients in a way to gain the most potential? Often we do things “just because” or “because that’s the way we’ve always done it” BUT in doing that “thing”, are we putting ourselves and our business in the place of most potential. I can’t stop thinking about it…and I encourage you to think about it too.

Now I’m off to be creative! Okay, first I’ll get some coffee, THEN I’ll be creative.

Firsts.

When you do something FIRST you want it to count. You want it to be special, amazing, wonderful, and you want people to be wowed! Our friends over at STAPLEGUN got that chance. Their task: create the inaugural invitation for the First female Governor in the State of Oklahoma, Mrs. Mary Fallin. (This invitation will likely be on display at the Oklahoma History Center until, oh…probably the end of time….no pressure there.) Obviously pressure doesn’t get to those guys, because they literally knocked this project out of the park!

They created a classy and timeless invitation that wowed many as they arrived in mailboxes. (I never actually got one in the mail, it must have gotten lost. Surely, I was on the list….I waived at her when she was in the Edmond Liberty Fest Parade in 2009…we bonded.)

The invitation packet consisted of a booklet , an official invite, the response card, and an embossed envelope. It’s really quite impressive. After we delivered the finished product we then entered the piece into print competitions where we said things like “110# Classic Crest Solar White Cover, 4 color + PMS + Flood varnish, wet trap 2 side, 1 silver flat foil, 1 silver foil emboss.” (If you know what all that means, the FIRST step for you is admitting you have a problem.)

The piece won a local award and 3 National awards that we thought we should mention…

Personalized Direct Mail + PURLS = Marketing Strategy

We tell our customers all the time how personalized direct mail combined with PURLS can greatly increase their response rates. But, each time we get more data that backs up that statement, we like to share it! People like proof.

Recently this article was posted at PrintJunkie.net. (YES, there is a website for those addicted to print. The first step is admitting you have a problem.)

When you're done reading it, you'll say to yourself, "Can Heritage help me do all that? " The answer is, YES! Yes we can!

A recent article highlighted a prominent Midwest university who successfully deployed direct mail with a PURL to appeal to honors students as part of an admissions campaign. An A/B split test was conducted to research the affect of utilizing variable data printing in a marketing campaign.

Variable data printing tailored the direct mail postcard to the individual student’s interest in major, gender and whether or not they had visited the campus. Images and text were aligned to reflect the individual’s data. The PURL directed the students to a personalized landing page. For the other students, the Midwest university sent a more general mailing.

The university reported a 32% increase in student enrollment in 2010 over the prior year. 91% of those who registered were recipients of the PURL campaign. The use of a more focused mailer resulted in a 29% savings in printing costs.

“It’s all about making it relevant versus having high volume.”

At the same time, a non-profit organization used a personalized postcard and PURL to appeal to donors as part of their annual giving campaign. It reported that their normal donation rate is 2% to 3%. This campaign returned a 14% donation rate. “This is a bit more expensive, but it drove more conversions.”

“The trend is toward more efficiency and figuring out a multichannel approach with a much more layered cadence of communications.”

As online marketing becomes more saturated, innovations in printing and production are driving more marketers to use traditional channels to drive multichannel efforts.

The communications team at Oklahoma State University – Undergraduate Admissions were looking for a promotional product that would stand out to students and allow them to correlate Oklahoma State University with cutting edge promotional products. (Hence the reason why they couldn’t just buy any-ol’-thing.)

They knew that silly bands were beginning to become very popular and decided to have orange and black Pistol Pete’s created to put in campus tour and event bags.

We sent an image of Pistol Pete to our vendor and had these custom silly bands created just for them!
When students stepped on campus and received their goody bags, the silly bands were an instant hit!

We schmooze twice a year at the OKC Chamber of Commerce event SchmoozaPalooza! (I can now spell it without having to look it up.) It’s a fun event and we always have a great time. This time around Groupon sponsored a vendor lounge and we were treated to free appetizers and drinks – that was nice, REALLY nice! (Thanks Groupon!) We always go to Schmooza with a new theme, something fun and different. This year it was…

Nerf Dart Tag – Fury Fire! (Have I told you lately that I love my job?) It was so fun.

But we weren’t just playing tag- there was a method to our madness. We were talking about hitting your target with One-to-One Marketing. We printed a nifty handout that talked all about One-to-One Marketing (which is a communication of individualized, relevant messages to a large number of recipients.) One of the key points was Proper Targeting + Proper Personalization = Better Response! At Heritage we can help set your company apart and get your message noticed with the use of…

Variable Data Printing – Using customer test and images to speak directly and personally to each of your customers instead of sending everyone the same message/offer.

Cross Media Marketing – Using more than one medium to connect with your audience.

The channels we have available to integrate your company’s marketing efforts are: Direct mail, Email Marketing, Personalized URL’s/Landing Pages, Text Messaging Campaigns, and Social Media. It was a hit! People obviously loved playing Dart Tag with their friends and we even had some customers come by and ask to shoot at us, so we played along and let them. (We think they enjoyed that part a little TOO much!)

We handed out these fun slinky note pads with targets on them (hmmm…I bet I know where you can get some of those if you like them! Hint hint.)

Overall the event was a huge success – I definitely think we hit the TARGET!

We printed a book for our fab friends over at Funnel Design Group! They designed the book for the PHF Research Park – we’ll stop here for a minute because I know you’re asking yourself, “what does PHF Research Park do?” Well let me use their words and tell you, (I’m sure they’d say it better anyway)… The Presbyterian Health Foundation Research Park is a 27-acre, seven-building, 700,000 square-foot complex that supports biomedical technology.

The Research Park is located in close proximity to the Oklahoma Health Center. At the Research Park, Presbyterian Health Foundation's mission is to provide biotech companies with Class A wet laboratory space and office space, currently there are 36 science based companies housed at the complex. As you can see they do a lot! They created this "Action Report" to raise awareness and promote the important and life-saving science happening in Oklahoma! The reports were distributed to the investors, lawmakers, and the scientific business sector. Funnel's objective was to create a comprehensive overview of the vast scientific research going on at PHF Research Park.

The custom microscopic imagery forming “words” was designed to give the reader the “Aha” moment that a scientist might encounter when solving a scientific puzzle. As far as design goes, some of our favorite parts of the book are the French Poptone Tangy Orange flysheets & matching orange envelope, the rounded corners of the book & the label that wraps around the cover similar to that on a prescription bottle. Pretty cool!

Matt Goad , Creative Director at Funnel had these words to say, “This project was commissioned by the President of the Presbyterian Health Foundation Michael D. Anderson, PhD in 2010, being his final year as acting President before retiring. Dr. Anderson is a big proponent of Scientific Research and Creativity in Oklahoma, and without him this book would never have been possible. We are truly indebted to him!”

Matt also bragged on us too (and since it’s our blog we feel it’s only appropriate to share it) “Heritage and our account manager made this very large and complex project very painless and actually fun!” Now that’s what we like to hear!

Thank you PHF for promoting scientific research and innovation in this great state. Also, thanks to Funnel Design for sparking creativity, thinking outside the box, and allowing us to be a part of that creativity. We enjoyed seeing it come alive on paper!

Let's Celebrate!

Recently we helped our friends over at NEWCASTLE Gaming Center pull off something pretty cool!

They needed a creative way to invite their VIP’s to a Mardi Gras Tournament Celebration, and we helped them do just that!

We printed the invitations that were made to look like Mardi Gras masks, then they were also die-cut.

The invitation then was placed in a box (boxes are more likely to get opened, because people are just too curious and they HAVE to know what’s in it). Inside the box were two sets of beads (you can’t have Mardi Gras without beads) and the beads had customized medallions – reinforcing the NEWCASTLE brand!

The remainder of the box was filled with string confetti that matched the printed piece & beads. A label was printed using variable data on the outer box wrap.

NEWCASTLE Gaming Center sent the boxes to their VIP’s – and we ran their mailing list through NCOA & made a few corrections. (NCOA is National Change of Address which helps reduce undeliverable mail by automatically updating your list with addresses of customers who have recently moved.) We recommend running all lists through NCOA, but especially if the item you’re mailing costs more to mail (like a box), you don’t want to waste postage on a bad address.

The NEWCASTLE Gaming Center Mardi Gras Tournament Celebration was very successful and they had a GREAT turnout…that’s what we like to hear!

Those creative folks over at Neenah Paper have an Environmental Calculator that allows users to instantly calculate the environmental savings achieved by using paper made with post consumer fiber as well as the savings from using paper made with 100 percent renewable energy. (It's super cool!)

Symbols for wood, water, energy and waste can be used in creating customized savings reports for annual reports and other print projects. Information on how to use the symbols is included in the Symbols Toolkit, which you can download on their site as well!

New Partnership

We're always excited when we embark on new partnerships with vendors, customers & clients, but this recent partnership is different...exciting, and different, and we're excited to share the news with you.

First, some history...

The Center of Family Love, located in Okarche, Oklahoma, serves as a safe haven and home for over 117 developmentally challenged adults of all ages and abilities. Now in their 30th year, CFL provides a true continuum of care for the challenged adult.

Recently Heritage was set up as a work environment enclave for CFL residents. What does this mean? Well, as an enclave CFL residents come to Heritage to work, and work right alongside Heritage fulfillment employees kitting items and fulfilling certain projects when appropriate. A CFL job coach is assigned to encourage the employees and to ensure that projects and tasks are being completed.

Now for some good ol' fashioned quotes...

David Hardin is Director of Vocational Services at CFL and believes it’s a perfect situation for their folks to work. He said, “It gives them self confidence and makes them excited to come to work each day.”

Larry Smith, State Use Administrator and Contracting Officer, is pleased with the partnership as well, and said “The CFL residents are happy at Heritage; it brings joy to us knowing that they’re happy and thriving in a safe work environment.”

The enclave partnership between CFL and Heritage is rapidly growing as new projects arrive each week. Curtis Jones, our VP of Sales at Heritage, said “I’m excited to see what opportunities become available for our CFL team, they are capable, meticulous, and are clearly devoted to the work they do! They’re encouraging our employees just as much as we’re encouraging them.”

Heritage sponsored the monthly OKC Ad Club meeting this past Wednesday. Kent Dean (the guest speaker) is a 22-year veteran of the advertising industry and is also a Licensed Facilitator for True Colors™ . His seminar, Improving Workplace Communication... or Why Do I Have to Work With Freakin' Aliens, was great! We left saying things like, "oh, girl.....you are SO gold!" and "I'm blue, hug me, hug me!" I guess you'd have to be there, to get it. Sorry.

We decided since we were going to be at a True Colors workshop folks should actually get to color! So we had a little coloring contest, winner receives a $100 VISA check card.

As you know, the State of Oklahoma is changing! It’s wonderful to see all the changes to the landscape as well as streets, highways, buildings, historic areas…everything! But, did you also know it’s changing virtually too?

Fight Like a Girl!

You already know we love those folks over at INTEGRIS! We’ve been managing their company store for a while now but recently we were contacted about a new program for them. INTEGRIS Women's Health Services wanted to raise breast cancer awareness. They were on a bit of a time crunch, and wanted t-shirts printed to offer to their employees. We got the ball rollin’ and produced these adorable pink shirts…

with the title “Fight Like a Girl”. The shirts were going to be available for 10 days online and no one realized how popular they were going to be! Well 10 days, and 2700 shirts later, we thought “hmmmmm, I guess they liked ‘em!” We did a reorder and in one week another 1200 were sold! Even the guys were ordering them for their wives, it was a successful campaign to say the least!

Heritage is making a donation to the Susan G. Komen foundation on behalf of all INTEGRIS Health Employees.

Great job INTEGRIS – Go pink!

Apple a Day

Recently we decided to try a little direct mail campaign for Heritage! (We wanted to try out some new solutions and track the response rate of the direct mail as well.) At Heritage we have to be able to show our customers, first hand, what's working and what's not when it comes to direct mail. (Studies online show that most campaigns that involve variable data text & imaging can receive more than 19% response rate, as opposed to those using no variable data at only 1% response rate. We had to prove it!)

Our "Sweet Smell of Success" campaign launched a few weeks ago. The piece was designed using variable data text, and looked like an iPad. Once opened, the recipient was asked to "scratch the apple" if they smelled the apple scent they were sent to a website to enter our contest for a iPad give-a-way! Let the scratching begin....

Obviously, we used a green apple scent on the apple, and it smelled great!!! (Made me want some green apple Jolly Ranchers each time I smelled it!) We sent out 489 pieces, and got an overwhelming response rate of 22%! Woo-hoo!

We collected our responses and did a good-ol'-fashioned drawing. This is Tim, he's one of our expert variable data gurus....so we thought he'd be perfect to draw out our winning name. All the names went in....

and our lucky winner was....

Marla Stebens from Pioneer Telephone in Kingfisher, Oklahoma!

She was so fun and so excited she won! (We were excited too!)

We took her some yummy apple treats from Panera Bread!
Oh....and we took her a 3G iPad! (I tried to give her the empty box, but she didn't fall for it!)

Recently we attended the Wellness Rocks Tour for INTEGRIS Health. (Forget Wellness Rocks, these PEOPLE rock!! We love them!)

We manage the apparel website for INTEGRIS employees, so attending their yearly benefits fair was a GREAT way to meet INTEGRIS employees and show them all the cool new merchandise on the website.

INTEGRIS does so many amazing things for their employees, their Total Rewards Fair is a chance for the employees to come through and meet with representatives from each company and organization that provides benefits to INTEGRIS employees.

Elvis even stopped by, and got dressed up….

Because people gravitate toward print. A total of 38% of households surveyed by the U.S. Postal Service in 2006 found direct mail pieces interesting. That study also found that 85% of mail is either read or visually scanned by recipients. And direct mail is also a great way to expand business relationships and keep customers loyal. A study by the Rochester Institute of Technology Printing Industry Center found that 67% of respondents like getting mail about new products from companies they do business with.

Print is beautiful.
Why do they call it the graphic arts? Because print is beautiful and printers continue to consider every job they do a personal masterpiece. And now, advanced printing techniques — like high-fi color and advanced screening— make their work more appealing and more compelling. Photos seem to jump off the page. Special effects draw the eye to the printed content, and a new generation of papers and substrates make readers want to touch and feel your message. You can’t get any closer than that. The beauty of print will enhance your product or service, giving it a special appeal of its own and an extra tangible dimension that no electronic media can impart.

Print plays well with others.
Sure, the Internet is cool. What’s cooler is using a printed direct mail campaign to draw prospects to a personalized website, then following up with a printed thank-you card or closer. Yes, the World Wide Web provides a real-time interactive environment, but so do the telephone and the television. Print enhances the impact of all of those media by providing your client’s prospects with an extra dimension. One that’s friendly. One that’s warm. One that’s inviting. And, one that they can’t very well ignore because they’re holding it right in their hands. Consider the 2003 research published in the Journal of Advertising Research, which examined the advertising impact on weekly sales of a pizza franchiser. It found that the best combination of media in driving sales is direct mail and national TV advertising used together. The print/broadcast duo doubled the impact of using any one medium alone. An American Business Media study adds more insight into the effectiveness of combining print with other media. According to that research, B-to-B magazines were viewed by prospects as trustworthy and objective, websites were seen as the place where they received timely information, and trade shows were viewed as the place for interactions and to improve their awareness of alternatives. That must be why smart marketers are using all three outlets to maximize their ROI.

Buyers seek print.
Online consumers who received a printed catalog from any given retailer were nearly twice as likely to make an online purchase at that retailer’s website. The finding comes from a com Score survey based on 6,400 responses from online shoppers. The reason for the sales windfall: consumers seek print when they’re ready to buy. That’s a fact supported by a 2005 field study by the Direct Marketing Association. Scoring the primary channels for generating orders, the research found that 60% came from printed catalogs, 24% were inspired by retail settings and only 9% arrived via Internet. The percent of sales by channel also showed print’s pulling power. Paper catalogs accounted for 42% of sales, retail 20%, websites 26% and other channels 12%. In a 2006 study of newspaper readers sponsored by the Newspaper Association of America, 78% reported that they use newspaper inserts to plan shopping and 76% say that these inserts have helped them save money. The moral: If you’re not using print, you’re missing out on big numbers.

Print is credible.
The phrase, “Get it down on paper” has never been more meaningful. Having words and images that you can examine and hold in your hand, review, show to others and keep in a safe place provides a degree of reassurance that no bit-and- byte medium can match. People love the speed and scope of the Internet, but the WWW’s fleeting nature makes them wonder: Am I getting the fast shuffle here? And what’s all this contradictory information? Conversely, our ink-on-paper medium is believable because print is real, print is timeless and print is focused. An increasing number of marketers are leveraging print’s high credibility by using custom publications to get their messages out and absorbed. More than 32 billion custom publications circulate annually in the United States, according to the Custom Publishing Review’s 2006 Annual Report. Total expenditures on the medium amounted to $29.9 billion for the year. The researchers also found that 66% of people surveyed read custom publications and that 80% agree that custom publications contain useful information. They are believers because print is the credible medium.

Print puts them in control.
Telemarketing is the crudest form of cold calling and, with the growth in do-not-call lists, its effectiveness has sunk to an all-time low. In fact, a Time magazine poll ranked telemarketing number four on the list of the worst ideas of the 20th century. Today, it has gotten to the point that many companies stay away from the phone because they don’t want their reputations damaged by overeager telemarketers. But what happens when we add print to the equation? Send prospects a personalized mailing that introduces the caller and lets them tell you the best time to call. Now you’re putting the potential customer in control of the situation. There are no more interruptions at dinner. There is only a positive flow of information between the marketer and the consumer. The bond starts to get stronger, the relationship grows, and the sale becomes a natural progression of the power of print rather than a rude intrusion.

Print is personal.
It’s time to put each prospect’s name up in lights, literally. Or use a skywriter to put your personalized message to them in the clouds. Or maybe you want to include a photo or the specific product in which they expressed interest. Print can do all that and more because print takes marketing personally. Using new variable data printing (VDP) and one-to-one messaging techniques, you can personalize each and every piece of your print campaign — right down to the specific photos you use and every word of your pitch. Did someone say relationship building? According to a 2004 report by Interquest, the response rate for customized color direct mail campaigns ranged from 6% to 75%, with an average of 21%. The response rates were, on average, 5.6 times higher for customized color versions than for simple mail merge applications. The more you individualize print, the more individuals you will inspire.

Print is everywhere.
We’re used to being surrounded by print. We’re comfortable with it. We want more. What do the numbers say? Consider a 2006 survey by the magazine Graphic Design USA. It found that 9 out of 10 of the designers polled have worked in print during the last year. What’s more, a total of 91% of the respondents’ projects involved print exclusively or were comprised of a substantial print component. The survey also discovered that 71% of the designers’ total work hours were devoted to print-driven projects. Look at event marketing. It wouldn’t be possible without print. Programs, posters, signage of all kinds, special commemorative publications — print is on the scene at ball games, motor sports venues, concerts, shows, fairs, museums, galleries and rallies. Wherever a crowd gathers, print can provide a platform for marketers and a fresh perspective for fans. There is even evidence that we like print more than television. Those are the vital signs of a medium that’s vibrant and valuable.

So the moral of the story is...keep PRINTING! It works.

Our 1 Year Anniversary

We started the Heritage blog one year ago today. (Seems like only yesterday, sort-of!)

It's only fitting that the traditional 1 year anniversary gift is PAPER! Makes me think back to all the cool printed pieces we've produced and blogged about. I haven't just blogged about printed pieces, I've blogged about our company history, promotional products, company stores, a Vegas wedding, our amazing customers, some rockin' pimped pumpkins, and even office butt-stations. (You really have to read that last one, it doesn't sound right out of context!)

When I told people around the office it had been one year since I started the blog they said things like...

"wow, really?"

"hmmmm"

"it's been a year?"

"what blog?"

As you can see, this blog is changing lives. It's powerful, I tell ya. Powerful!

Thanks so much to our friends & followers who have read the blog for the past year. It's been so fun and I'm excited to see what happens in the coming year!

Tradeshow Fun

Let's be honest, trade shows are a lot of work! Reserving tables, setting up, traveling, walking to-and-from your car 13 times to get everything you need is a lot of work! BUT, each time we go through that saga, at the end we say "Man, that was fun!"

I think the "fun" comes from the energy of the crowds of people, most are there to have a good time, learn something new, and it doesn't hurt to come home with bags of free goodies!

Recently we attended the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce event, SchmoozaPalooza.
Our VP of Sales, Curtis, (pictured below on the left) brought a air gun with him to the event. It puffs a blast of air across the room and it's hysterical to watch people who get "puffed" because they don't know what happened to them, or where the puff of air came from! It's great fun!

There was, however, another booth with a loaded air gun across the way, which caused some friendly competition! We were literally blown away when this crazy cat rolled up and started blasting us! I guess it's the relaxed atmosphere of trade shows, but I love the fact that sales interactions become....uh....much more......informal! I saw a gal wearing this shirt, and I thought it was great...

Hole in One!

Anytime you plan a golf tournament (or anything outside) in Oklahoma in the month of MAY you're taking your chances. Rain, snow, hail, freezing temps, tornadoes, 110 degree weather, high winds, or even sunshine...the possibilities are endless. On May 7th we took our chances and ended up with an amazing day, despite some mild wind. (Okay MAYBE it was a little more than mild wind.)

The 2010 Jerry Funck Benefit Golf Tournament was a HUGE SUCCESS! (If you don't remember who Jerry is you can read all about him HERE. His daughter Rachael works for Heritage as well.)

The tournament started at 11:30...and everyone was literally blown around the course until about 5:00 PM!

After the tournament we had a cook-out to announce the tournament winners. Our owner, Dave, stepped up to the plate (or grill in this case) and cooked burgers and hot dogs for everyone! YUM!

The golf carts lined up to get some grub! Good stuff!

We're always happy when we hear that something we printed for a client
receives awards or recognition, because we know that great designers
pick great printers to make their print pieces greater. (I'm thinking
of using this as one of our tag lines, "Heritage - We make it look
greater!" ...yeah I'm still workin' out the kinks.)

On Saturday, February 20, the Oklahoma pro chapter of the Society of
Professional Journalists held its annual awards banquet in Bricktown.
At the banquet, the Spring 2009 issue of the OCU LAW Magazine was
awarded Third Place in the Best PR Publication category and Second
Place for Best PR Publication Cover.

You HAD to know that today's blog would be green and totally eco-friendly.

At Heritage we're committed to reducing, reusing and recycling whenever and wherever possible!

REDUCE:
Vegetable oil based inks can be made from a variety of sources including soy-bean, corn and linseed oils. By replacing mineral oil with vegetable oil, this means we can reduce or even cut out volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. VOCs are carbon-containing gases and vapors that are released from solvents used during the printing process. The most significant environmental impact of VOCs is their formation with vehicle exhaust to form photochemical smog. However, in liquid form VOCs can effect water and soil quality. This is why we have opted to use vegetable oil based inks. Pretty cool, huh?

REUSE:
When it comes to protecting and preserving our environmental resources, perhaps no other organization is as well known and respected worldwide than FSC. Heritage is proud to be FSC certified and to support other FSC certified products and companies. Being FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified gives Heritage customers the choice to print on paper that originates in responsibly managed forests.
As a Chain of Custody certified printer, Heritage is entitled to apply the FSC's "checkmark-and-tree" trademark logo (see below) to projects printed on FSC-certified paper. Heritage is only the third printer in Oklahoma to achieve certification.

The FSC Chain of Custody certification reflects Heritage's commitment to environmentally friendly manufacturing practices and provides our customers an additional option to help reduce the environmental impact of their printed materials. Our customers can be confident that when they ask for FSC certified paper, they will receive it!

RECYCLE:
At Heritage we recycle all waste paper including office paper and all aluminum plates as well.

There are many ways your business can GO GREEN as well! Things like...

• Recycling paper, plastic, aluminum, ink cartridges.
• Reuse packing materials and cardboard boxes.
• Eliminate disposable cups, plates and utensils in the break room. Replace with permanent dishware.
• Switch to rechargeable batteries. Large office supply stores even have collection centers for recycling dead rechargeable batteries.
• Use eco-friendly cleaning products that are biodegradable and non-toxic.
• Purchase energy-efficient PCs, printers, and other equipment with the EnergyStar label.
• Donate or recycle old computers and equipment.
• Keep up with regular maintenance of all mechanical equipment.

Finally, I'll leave you with this St. Patrick's Day picture that has absolutely NOTHING to do with going green, recycling, or the environment. I found it online while googling the word "green"(lesson learned: be careful what you google!) Apparently it was taken in 1987 at the St. Patrick's day parade in New York. Wow. This picture is disturbing on SO many levels, but yet you can't stop looking at it, can you?

Jerry Funck worked for Heritage in various roles for over 18 years. Unfortunately in 2008 he had to step down from his position with Heritage, due to his battle with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) disease. AS is a severe form of arthritis that causes inflammation of the joints between the spinal bones and causes joints to fuse together.

At Heritage, we consider Jerry family and knew this year, our golf tournament needed to benefit him. Proceeds will help cover his monthly medications and other medical expenses.

Jerry’s daughter Rachael Funck Chambless, grew up watching her dad work at Heritage and she knew when she grew up she wanted to work at Heritage too! (Okay maybe that’s not how the story went, but she works here now and loves it too!) Anyone who knows them only has good things to say about them. The 2010 Addy Awards Gala was this weekend at the Skirvin Hotel. The Addy's recognize the best creative efforts in the Oklahoma City metro area over the last year. It was a night filled with laughter, fun, cheers, wine, and then more laughter.

The design team at Oklahoma Christian handled the creative to promote the 2010 Addy's. The theme was "We are the Storytellers", and it was perfect! They deserve an Addy for the Addy's. Is that possible? It should be.

Curtis and his wife, Lisa, couldn't stay the entire evening because Curtis wasn't feeling well. (You KNOW Curtis isn't feeling well when he gives away drink tickets!!) Poor guy.

Bad lighting and poor camera operation caused Laurie, Eric and Julie to look angelic in this picture...

My husband (total trooper) came with me for the evening. He wore his funeral tie, I'm not gonna lie, it's his wedding tie too! He hates to dress up. If he can't wear Vans he's not happy, but he sat there and acted happy...maybe it was the Corona talking, I'm not sure.

My favorite quote of the evening was "The Addy Awards is 2 hours worth of awards stretched out over 4 hours!" So, so true.

I lied. There is a little tootin' going on...

Heritage was recognized as a Top 400 Printer in the December 2009 edition of Printing Impressions magazine. This is pretty much like getting on FORTUNE Magazines 100 Best Companies to work for list. Pretty much.

All kidding aside, this is a great honor! The Printing Impressions 400, provides the industry’s most comprehensive ranking of leading printing companies in the United States and Canada. Heritage has moved up 19 spots from our previous ranking in 2008. There are close to 40,000 printers in the US & Canada, and we're in the top 400...we think that's pretty cool.

Since it’s almost Valentine’s Day I thought I would introduce to you Harry “The Heritage Heart.” He’s really quite adorable. (Sorry this picture is a little blurry, he would NOT sit still.)

It’s wonderful working at a company that specializes in promotional products….you can get whatever you want! Harry’s a Heritage promo piece for Valentine’s and Healthy Heart Month! (But don’t tell him that, he thinks he’s getting an office.)

When I told him he was going to be featured on the blog he smiled. (Sometimes his smile seems fake, but I hoped this time it was genuine.)

I asked him what he loved about Heritage….

He loves excel. (He's kind of a dorky heart.)

He loves the promotional products sample room. (Especially Betty & Lucy.)

He loves doughnuts.

He loves the Heidelberg.
He loves naps.
He loves the vending machine.
He loves to read.
He loves recycling.

He loves pretty much everything! Well almost everything. He doesn’t love the fact that his back has become a billboard for Heritage. “We LOVE when you call US! ~Heritage 800.654.1713.” He said, “I’m not just another squishy toy, I have feelings too. I don’t wanna parade around with a sign on my back.”

Gimme a break Harry! You should count your blessings. “We LOVE when you call US” is a much better slogan than the one that didn’t make the cut…"For a good time call Heritage.” SEE, told you.

Not too Proud to Wear a Silly Hat with Candles on It

I should clarify that statement. We’re not too proud to wear a silly hat with candles on it IF there’s a chance we can win money! (I’ll explain later.)

Each quarter we have employee meetings where departments gather in groups and we cover company info. When I say we cover “company info” we cover everything, which, as an employee, I think is great. It gives us a realistic look at where the company stands on revenue, expenses, manufacturing, sales, and overall growth.

Some companies may not feel comfortable sharing detailed info like that with their employees on a quarterly basis but our fearless leader, head honcho, big man on campus, Papa Smurf, king of the jungle, boss man Dave DeLana has been doing it since 1984. He says, “We’re all in this together! Our employees need to know what equipment we’re buying and they need to understand long-term investments that we make as a company. The meeting brings up great discussion questions and gives employees a better understanding of why we do what we do!”

After each group meets to discuss the company financials we ALL gather together and have a little informal meeting and that’s where the silly hats come in.

We do several things in this meeting. We meet new staff, we recognize employee anniversaries, we usually make fun of someone for something, we laugh, and then we drag out all the birthday folks from that quarter and have them put on their silly birthday hat. All the names are then dropped into a hat and there’s a draw-down.

As names are drawn out of the hat participants are eliminated, all names are drawn until there is one LUCKY birthday participant left! That person win’s an envelope of cash!!!! (I still haven’t heard how much moo-lah is actually in the envelope, but I’ll let you know when I win the next time around. Grin.)

After we’ve humiliated ourselves by wearing silly birthday hats, they feed us!

It’s like feeding angry bears at the Zoo. Small children and the elderly are warned to stay back as the stampede tramples through. The managers are kind enough to put on their hairnets and serve us lunch, which I think is super cool!

Time out, I’m not sure I’ve actually seen them wearing hairnets…and they’re making us wear those silly birthday hats! That is totally unfair…but I guess they do give cash away, and they feed us a good FREE lunch, so I’ll let it slide.

I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore…

Thank God.

The higher up powers at Heritage thought it would be a good idea to send Jodie and I to Paper School. Why? Because she and I knew nothing about paper. Nothing. Well other than critical terms like “when it’s shiny that like means it’s glossy”. (NOW you see why they sent us!)

Jodie works as sales support assisting all our account reps and account managers…the entire sales team, and she also helps me out with marketing projects as well (she’s a busy gal). Apparently they didn’t want to send us on the trip alone because paper school can get “crazy wicked wild”…so Curtis (VP of Sales) went to meet some clients as well. (He doesn’t need paper school.)

You learn a lot about co-workers when you travel together. Like for instance when Curtis tried to navigate through the city with the gps application on his iphone.

We were in the car a total of 4.5 hours and got lost 4 times (you do the math)! This caused my blood pressure to sky rocket and it caused Jodie to actually dig out a paper map! (Ahhh, thank God for the old fashioned paper map!) We did bond on the trip, which is normal after you yell at someone “that gps is a piece of…” ahem, well you get the point.

Our three largest paper vendors are Xpedx, Clampitt & Unisource. (We love them all.) Since Curtis was headed to Kansas we hit the Xpedx paper school, and we learned so much!

How paper was made, poor paper formation, all about uncoated, coated, felt, text, cover, opaque, newsprint, parchment, vellum, linen..the list goes on and on (really on, and on). It was fascinating, and now Jodie and I are testing our knowledge by feeling paper and trying to guess what it is! We're getting better.....

I think our sales team has a combined printing and paper background of like 185 years…so they have been kind enough to work with us and pass on their wisdom. (Patience young grasshopper, patience.)

Our ASI team just arrived back from the PPAI Expo in Vegas (lucky dawgs). The PPAI (Promotional Products Association International) Expo draws thousands of suppliers, distributors and industry associates from across the country, around the globe.

At the show there are convention rooms and rooms and rooms full of gidgets, gadgets, chotchkies, and thing-a-ma-bobs!

Our team walked for hours & hours meeting new vendors, getting new ideas and seeing the hottest new items on the market! They were exhausted….but they were in Vegas so I don’t feel sorry for them! It’s Vegas you’re supposed to be exhausted, right?

They left the show with tons of samples & ideas and they also ordered items that will be arriving over the next few days. Their carryon bags were full as they arrived at the airport, and I can only imagine the baggage security check point at Vegas was running slower than normal after that show. People with bags full of lollipops, hand sanitizers and ink pens shaped like windmills. But then again I’m sure that’s not the strangest things the baggage folks have seen at the Vegas airport. Yikes.

Giving Back

So this year back in...oh...September we decided we wanted to do something "different" for our holiday cards and Christmas gifts. So the sales team piled in the conference room and began brainstorming (you can only imagine how scary that was). We came up with an idea to give each customer $1000 in cash....but we decided that was too easy.

So.....we created project Giving Back.

Customers were sent a recyclable gift bag that was theirs to keep.

We also sent them a brown paper bag as well. On the brown paper bag was a label asking our customers to donate items to Infant Crisis Services!

(Now...I wouldn't be a good Director of Marketing for a printing and promotional products company if I didn't pause to tell you about the use of variable data on this project. Each box had a customized label with a corresponding label on the bag as well. The company name, customer's name, and personal label changed for each individual package! Each package was just a little sample of everything you can receive at Heritage...printing, a promotional product, and fulfillment. Okay, I'll take my marketing hat off and put my Santa hat back on.)

The Infant Crisis Services wish list was placed on each bag, and the bags started flowing in! Our customers rock. R-O-C-K, rock! Heritage also offered to MATCH what was collected. So for each bag collected, we donated a bag as well!!!

This morning we delivered over 100 bags and boxes of diapers to Infant Crisis Services! It was amazing!!! (Can you tell how happy our guys were for having to wear Santa hats???)

Again, it WAS amazing! The response from you, our customers, was amazing and Infant Crisis Services was touched by your kindness and generosity!!!

Free to Live

We recently printed calendars for Free To Live. Free To Live is a non-profit sanctuary for stray, abandoned and mistreated dogs and cats. It is the largest no-kill sanctuary in Oklahoma. From Free To Live more than 500 animals are adopted out to loving homes each year. At the sanctuary, animals that are not adopted live out their lives with healthy food, shelter and medical care. Euthanasia is not practiced.

Well...the 2010 Pet Calendars are now available!
These calendars were beautifully done (I'm not just saying that because we printed them...well maybe I am. No matter why I'm saying it, they are nice, and you need one!) It has over 200 pages, and has month/week at-a-glance for jotting down things to remember. It's packed full of cute, funny and absolutely precious photos as well as poems, stories and helpful information.

Don't you need one???

I mean who can resist a sweet puppy dog face....

Calendars are only $15, and proceeds go to Free to Live! (Let us know if you want one!)

I’ll be HOME for Christmas!

We are currently working on several print projects for our friends at Home Creations. They’ve been building new homes in Oklahoma since 1981.

They build ENERGY STAR qualified new homes with tornado safety features, AND they even pay closing costs. Wow! Dear Santa (aka Husband), All I want for Christmas is a Home Creations home, preferably the Wilshire floor plan, with black granite counter-tops, and a Jacuzzi tub. That’s all.

You can only imagine the joy and celebration that took place at the Home Creations office when President Obama signed the Home Buyer Tax Credit extension! The extension continues the $8,000 tax credit for first-time buyers and those who haven’t owned a home in three years, and it offers a tax credit of $6,500 for existing home owners who purchase a new home. The home purchased must be used as a primary residence. Buyers must be under contract by April 30, 2010, and close no later than June 30, 2010. We’re not obsessed with John Deere around here….well, a few of us might be. (Remember this?)

Our friends at Western Equipment own stores in Clinton, Weatherford, Hobart, Alva, Altus, Woodward, Childress and Amarillo, and they sell a lot of tractors, combines, mowers, and sprayers! But did you know that they also sell t-shirts, sweatshirts, artwork, gun safes, and dog collars? Yep, they do!

Their 9^th store is online! They created greentractor.com, which features John Deere merchandise, and they have ANYTHING you could ever want with a yellow deer on it! Backpacks, money clips, poker chips, pet supplies, grill covers, coat racks, golf balls, license plates, and even remote control gators! (Yeah...I'm not gonna show this one to my husband because if he sees it, he will own one before sundown!)

Mirror, Mirror in the Mail

Recently the crazy-creative-collaborative-charismatic design team over at 3rd Degree created a cute & catchy direct mail piece using variable data! And if there's one thing we LOVE here at Heritage it's variable data!! The team was actually hired to launch a new brand for Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates. The direct mail piece was just one component, of a much larger effort to launch the new brand. A pale pink direct mailer with a die cut mirror was created. The reflection in the mirror was created using variable data, so the customer's name (reflected in the mirror) changed for each individual piece. It was a hit, and Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates received great feedback from their customers as well.
You know, Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates and Variable Data Print have a lot in common! They both make you look good, and get you noticed! (I'm going to bet that's the first, and possibly last time, someone will compare cosmetic surgery to variable data print capabilities.)

With Variable Data Printing, we customize every mail piece unique to the recipient. You can vary the text or even the photos used on each card. The result is personalized mail that really gets noticed. Since response rates are generally much higher with variable data printing, you can mail smaller quantities and still achieve better results.

So in conclusion I think all you need to remember is this:

If you need to get your BUTT in gear and do some variable data direct mail campaigns, you need to see us. If you need to save your companies BUTT and get a new brand, you need to see them. And, if you just want a brand new BUTT for yourself, then definitely see them.

Got Uniforms?

Remember a few weeks ago when I blogged about the Love’s Corporation and I talked about the uniform program we offer for their subsidiary companies, Gemini & Musket? Well if you don’t remember you should click here!

With around 400 employees combined, the Musket division handles fuel distribution and Gemini Motor Transport operates 190 trucks, servicing Love’s Travel Stops and other fueling stations across the United States. All that makes perfect sense now, right? Well…since that’s cleared up, now you’re wondering how Heritage provides solutions to them. (If you weren’t wondering that, just play along with me please.)

Musket & Gemini needed to come up with a way for their truck driving employees to order uniforms. You know things like….

fire retardant jump suits! (I wanted to have a video of our Director of Sales, Curtis Jones, wearing one of these suits. I thought we could have the sales team light him on fire so you could see how the suits really do work….wouldn’t you know that HR gets in the way of all my fun ideas!)

Let’s get back on track, Heritage created an online store for Musket & Gemini employees. A draw-down account feature was used to identify what each employee had to spend on uniforms. When the employee logs onto the website the amount they have to spend is clearly visible on the site. As items are purchased throughout the year, the dollar amount decreases automatically. Both companies have been pleased with the ease of the system and they like the fact that they can easily track what dollars are being spent. (Please note that there’s more than just uniforms on these sites! Managers have the ability to login to order promotional products, holiday gifts, service awards, mailings and much more!)

We do wear many hats here at Heritage. You knew we did print, and you knew we sold promotional products, but I’m guessing you had no idea we managed online uniform stores too! We need to work that into our title: Heritage...Your Print, Promotional, Fulfillment and Uniform Solutions Source! Like it??? What?? Geeze…I asked to light one person on fire and suddenly none of my ideas are good!

Pimp My Pumpkin

Today at Heritage we had our first annual PIMP MY PUMPKIN contest! There were two different categories, carved and decorated! It was fun to see what everyone showed up with.

Ezmerelda was entered in the carved pumpkin contest. She was GREAT, and extremely detailed! (I need a better camera so I can take pictures of things like.....pumpkins! Feel free to leave the boss a blog comment requesting that I get a high-end professional camera! No really...go ahead.)

Ezmeralda witched her way right in to 2nd place!

We also had a carved John Deere pumpkin. All the guys loved this one! Why are guys so fascinated with tractors, and things that are spray painted green?? Whatever the reason, that great design and spray paint won that tractor lovin' boy $50 cash for 1st prize in the carved category!

In the decorated category we had 5 pumpkins to choose from!

Murray the Mummy was adorable! He had a little glittered head and squiggly eyes. He was super cute! So cute in fact, he won second place in the decorated contest!

We needed a high end arts category for the next two. The Nightwatchmen and the Naked Eye of Objectivity is our next featured pumpkin. It was a creative design and I always love a pumpkin with a story!

Can you say Better Homes & Gardens? This fabulous trio of pumpkins was amazing. The title of it was Nightmare before Christmas Tree. It's hard to see, but there are small holes drilled through the two bottom pumpkins and lights inside. It was impressive to say the least.

The Octomom pumpkin was featured with a few of her little ones. As you can tell by her expression she was overjoyed with her 1st prize recognition. Doesn't she look thrilled? She's hoping to get a Pimp My Pumpkin book deal.

And finally we had an adorable crafty pumpkin with an equally adorable title, "Sassy & Flashy I wanna WIN some Cashy!"

I usually don’t do two blog posts in one week but this event is tomorrow...and it’s so important I HAD to share it with you! Our promotional products team (remember we call them the ASI group) recently helped Integris come up with a few products to feature for Men’s Health University. This was tricky since the Men’s Health University covers a few subjects that we don’t freely talk about! Why don’t we talk about it??? We talk about breast cancer awareness all the time, but subjects for men’s health aren’t addressed as much! That is one main reason why Integris began this program.

This came from the Integris Men’s Health website…

Getting men to schedule annual check-ups is at best like pulling teeth. The alpha-male is taught from an early age that their individual health is not a main concern. The hunter/gatherer looks to take care of the family first, although by overlooking their own health they are doing the family a disservice. Men usually delay or avoid seeking medical attention even when they know something could be wrong.

That's why INTEGRIS Health has developed Men's Health University. Men-U gives men the opportunity for free health checks and cancer screenings in a tailgate party environment with food and door prizes.

The 2009 Men's Health University will be Saturday, October 24th from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Francis Tuttle Techonology Center - Reno Campus, which is located at 7301 W. Reno.

The health and cancer screenings include: Glucose, Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Vision, Hearing, EKG, Prostate, Colon, Oral, Skin and Colo-Rectal.

We ordered two products for Integris. The first was a self exam card that says “Hey Guys, Get Checked!” It gives detailed instructions for guys to do self examinations (so detailed, in fact, that I won’t be sharing them with you here, but I do encourage you guys to check out the Integris Men’s Health website! There’s a ton of great information and resources on the site!) Also we ordered a scroll pen, it features a chart with ages that men should have routine examinations. We feel like this is a great program, and think the folks at Integris do a wonderful job of keeping the state educated on potential health risks!

So tell the men in your life to get up, get out and "get checked" tomorrow!!

Bus Stop.....

Recently we produced a very cool piece for an emerging design studio in Oklahoma City, Studio fj, and their client ACOG. ACOG is the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments, and their purpose is to aid local governments in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and coordinating for sound regional development. ACOG is an organization of, by and for local governments that allows member entities to work in partnership to address issues or problems common to many jurisdictions. This regional cooperation serves to strengthen both the individual and collective capabilities of local governments.

This cool piece that the talented team over at Studio fj designed was the School Bus Idling Reduction: Project Report & Implementation Guide for Oklahoma School Districts. (Yes kids, you still have to write reports when you’re finished with school!)

The design was headed up by Studio fj's Owner, James Harber, and designer Kaleb Nimz. The introduction from the report states the following: “School bus idling wastes fuel and financial resources while producing exhaust emission that are harmful to human health and the environment. Beginning in late 2006, ACOG, Choctaw-Nicoma Park Public Schools, and the OK Department of Environmental Quality undertook a two-year project to determine the extent of fuel and emissions saving that OK school districts might expect by instituting a maximum five-minute school bus idling policy. This report offers the study’s finding to public school districts in Oklahoma and elsewhere so that limited resources can be maximized and children, teachers, bus drivers, parents, school administrations and other can enjoy the benefits of a healthier environment.” It amazes me all that goes in to making our city, country, and world environmentally safe and protected, and it makes me see how much we take for granted.

I know you’re thinking, “KJ aren’t you going to tell us WHY the printed piece was so cool??” Of course I am! Studio fj wanted to take a fresh approach and do something a little different with this project. It has spot UV on uncoated stock. (Gasp!)

In the past spot UV was used on coated stock to give a high definition finish and shine. When applied to uncoated stock it absorbed into the stock and really did nothing, you couldn’t even tell anything was different. Thanks to products and technology it is now possible to apply the spot UV on uncoated stock and achieve great contrast, and that’s just what we did. Also a readymade envelope was purchased and we printed it digitally in four color process. See…told you it was super cool!

Global Handwashing Day

Today is Global Handwashing Day! No, that does not mean it's the only day this year you need to wash your hands!

This is straight from the Global Handwashing Day website.... "October 15, 2009 will revolve around schools and children. On Global Handwashing Day, playgrounds, classrooms, community centers, and the public spaces of towns and cities will be awash with activity to drive handwashing behavior change on a scale never seen before, bringing the critical issue to center stage. Global Handwashing Day will be the centerpiece of a week of activities that will mobilize millions of people in more than 70 countries across all five continents to wash their hands with soap." It's a great initiative, you should check out their website!

At Heritage we thought it would be fun to make some posters (for our own restrooms) promoting hand washing. We also handed some posters out to customers along with some mini hand sanitizers as well! The signs said "Share your ideas. Share your lunch. Share your creativity. Share your money. Share your toys. Share your time....BUT DON'T SHARE YOUR GERMS!"

Our delivery drivers absolutely loved handing out little fru-fru bags of hand sanitizers with their deliveries this week! I'm sure they were muttering things like "that dang PR girl has us doing what??"

The little sanitizers say Heritage on them! (Want some with your company logo? Our ASI Team can make that happen!)

Since most kids in Oklahoma are out of school today for Fall Break, that doesn't leave much room for in-school activities focused on Global Handwashing Day. My 1st grader is out of school today so she got to tag along with me at work. She's loved it so far (there's an endless supply of paper and something called booger glue! What kid wouldn't be happy here??)

She asked me what she could do today and I told her she could help me blog! She was very excited. I told her the blog topic was hand washing and she said she should show people how to wash their hands.

Here are her directions (in her own words):

You should use soap to wash your hands.

You should use water whenever you're scrubbing with the soap.

Umm...use a towel to open the door, so you don't get more germs.

So easy a 6 year old can do it!

Knowing the importance of good handwashing is imperative in this germ-filled world we live in! Remember these words on this Global Handwashing Day..."Share your ideas. Share your lunch. Share your creativity. Share your money. Share your toys. Share your time....BUT DON'T SHARE YOUR GERMS!"

Their internal brand is “Making a Difference, You Take Care of Your Customers and We’ll Take Care of You!” (I worked for a company once and their motto was “You take care of your customers, or we fire you”, as you can see Love’s has a MUCH more motivating campaign!)

Heritage created an internal website for Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores Corporate Office that features Love’s branded items.

Each employee at the corporate office was given 10 Making a Difference (MAD) cards. When an employee observes another employee “living the brand”, they give them a MAD card. There is a space on the back of the card to write what the employee did to “make a difference”. Once the card is filled out, the card is delivered to the employee, and the employee can redeem it online to order Love’s merchandise.

The program is employee-driven, so the spirit of recognition is in the employees hands! The human relations department at Love’s tracks weekly what cards are given, and to date 290 employees have given cards, and 314 have received cards. The program is working well for the corporate office, and the employees appreciate the recognition.

We receive the orders here at Heritage and every other week we hand deliver gift bags, with hand written notes attached, to the corporate office. The folks at Love’s then deliver the bags to the employees, it’s personal and makes the employees feel special! When employees receive their gift bags it literally changes their life! (Okay…. so maybe its not life changing, but the point is, they’re happy!! And making people happy is what we specialize in!)

Great job Love’s for inspiring your employees to MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

It’s the Fonz! Fonzie was great, right? Everyone liked him!

I mean really, what parent wouldn’t like some older, biker dude hanging out with their high school age children? I remember watching those Nick-at-Nite reruns of Happy Days and I so badly wanted to be Pinky Tuscadero. I’m sure it was the name that I was drawn too, not the tight black pants and pink silky jacket. (Although I would totally wear one of those jackets if I had it!)

Well the creative department at Visual Image Advertising revived the Fonz for The City of Oklahoma City Utilities Department.

Meet FOGzie...
FOGzie wants you to put a lid on it, and he wants to talk to you about FOG!! (That’s Fats, Oils and Grease!) Fats, Oils, and Grease cause a lot of damage to your sink, pipes, and drainage system. This door hanger was created with a green plastic lid attached. FOGzie recommends this, “When you’ve got a bunch of grease dump it in an empty soup can, you can put this lid on the can and stick it in the freezer. After it freezes take the lid off and throw the can away. No mess, no worries, no problems, ya dig it? Take it from a cool guy like me, this lid can save you some major moolah!”

Pretty cool, aaaaaay? (Granted this is for people who cook with more than just their microwave, so I guess I’m out.) FOGzie even has his own website…check it out!

The FOGzie door hanger was printed here at Heritage (I’m sure you figured that out by now!) We worked with the great team over at Visual Image to make sure we got the right stock and construction to hold that light weight plastic lid in place. There were several stock dummies and mock ups created that were kicked around and abused! They wanted to pick something sturdy to insure that once FOGzie was placed on a door knob he & his lid would stay attached. They decided this design was the most durable and displayed FOGzie’s message and lid the best!

I think FOGzie is going to be a huge hit, and will really help educate people on FOG and how to properly dispose of it. So next time you’re frying up a steak sandwich, french fries, and a batch of Twinkies.. ….think to yourself “What would FOGzie do?”

I can’t lie to you, I’m addicted to this video website. I love making these videos, and I am SURE it’s not the last time you’ll see one of these videos pop up on our blog. And, don’t be surprised if you see me on some awards show for best director or something. Okay really I just upload the pictures and the video is created for me, it’s so easy a 2nd grader could do it…..but I should get some sort of credit!!

The holidays are rapidly approaching! I don’t care if you celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah….whatever the case…it’s coming up. AND that means you need to come up with a way to say thank you to your employees and customers for a great 2009!

Meet Curtis

This week is the first week for us to bring you a new feature we’d like to call “Meet & Greet”. Occasionally we’ll introduce you to someone from our amazing staff. (Sounds exciting, right?)

I know you read the title “Meet Curtis” and you’re thinking tell me more about this Curtis fellow. Well, my friend, it’s your lucky day. Here’s everything you never wanted to know about Curtis T. Jones.

The T stands for:
a) Thomas b) Troy c)Tyrone d) Tiger e) T-bone

You’ll have to wait for the answer, I’m not gonna give that away so soon!

Curtis has been in the printing industry for 24 years, and he attended Central State University. (For our readers under the age of 25, Central State’s the old name for UCO. The really old name. Really, really, really old name.)

He moved to Atlanta in 1989 and went to work for a Sales Incentive Marketing firm, and then left there to work for his largest print vendor as the plant manager. He moved back to Oklahoma in 1995, and started calling friends in the "biz" and they said, “You should go to work for Dave at Heritage!” It took several interviews but somehow Dave was tricked into hiring Curtis as a salesmen. Curtis also took on the responsibility of heading up the estimating department, until Dave tricked him into accepting the position as Chief Manufacturing Officer. He did that until 2005, and at that time Curtis went back to Atlanta to take care of some family biznas. (I say biznas, because that’s true Curtis lingo.) So he got back taking care of his family biznas in 2007 and somehow Curtis tricked Dave again, and he was hired to head up the sales team. And here we are today Curtis Tyrone Jones, Director of Sales & Marketing.

Because we love Curtis so much, we’ve compiled the “Top 10 Nicest Things We Could Think to Say About Curtis” list….

10. He’s smarter than your average bear. (We don’t know many bears, but we can only imagine he HAS to be smarter than one.)
9. He’s fun to drink with.
8. If Curtis gives you one of his dress shirts you don't have to worry about the sleeves being too long.
7. He’s an excel God. (Really! We bow to you, oh great one.)
6. Curtis is a great teacher… IF you can get him to sit still long enough to teach you something. (Can you say A.D.D? “Oh look, a chicken”)
5. He can design a pop-up, funky shaped, complicated box with his eyes closed. Then once it’s designed, he shows you how cool it is, over and over, and over.
4. He has more golf shoes then dress shoes
3. He moved to Atlanta and missed us so much, he had to come back…or the authorities made him, we’re not really sure!
2. He’s addicted to Drawords, and his true goal in life is to win one week, and be published on their site. (If you’re not addicted to Drawords yet, check it out…you won’t be able to stop yourself.)

And the #1 Nicest Thing We Could Think to Say About Curtis is...
1. He’s a great dad, great friend, and great to work with. (Awww man, that one’s gonna go right to his head.)

Now lets talk about the real reason we’re featuring “Meet Curtis” this week. On Monday, September 21st, Curtis is getting hitched, tying the knot, taking the plunge….YEP he’s getting married to a doll named Lisa Ontiveros. (Yeah, Lisa we know why you’re marrying him, you want the last name Jones instead of Ontiveros…smart move.) So why should YOU care about their wedding? Because you’re invited!! Yes that’s right, you can attend their wedding, and you don’t even have to bring a gift. They're getting married in Las Vegas and it’s going to be web cast! (Which I think is super cool, hence the need to blog about it.)

Over A Billion Served Daily

Okay so we don’t serve up a billion post cards “daily” but we’ve printed a few million post cards for this powerhouse company. Trost Consulting has partnered with Heritage for the past couple of years, and we work closely with them to provide high quality post cards for their clients.

Trost specializes in television, marketing, and direct mail campaigns.

Not only does Tracy Trost own Trost Consulting, he also owns Trost Moving Pictures. Did you catch that folks, Moving Pictures = Movies. Yes that’s right, he’s a film director. How cool is that? (Oh by the way Tracy, I did have leading roles in my high school performances of The Miracle Worker, Alice in Wonderland, and 1940’s Radio Hour. I’m just saying, if you ever needed…someone for tryouts...maybe...yeah okay, just have your people call my people.)

Okay, okay back to the movie….FIND ME, the first feature film of Trost Moving Pictures actually began in a company meeting when Tracy challenged his employees to clearly define a life goal and take little steps each day to make it happen.

To his surprise, one employee turned the tables on her boss and asked him what his dream was and
what steps he was taking to make it happen. As it turned out, Tracy hadn't taken any steps towards his goal of directing a feature film at the time and wanting to set the precedent for his employees, he
took his first step right then and there.

The journey started with a multitude of rough drafts and rewrites of the script that would eventually become FIND ME. Then, in November of 2008 an outpouring of Tracy's closest friends descended on Tulsa, OK to help make his dream a reality. FIND ME was shot in only 9 days, a monumental feat and then after months of editing, scoring, and graphics it was released on DVD May 30, 2009 to great reviews.
FIND ME is a story of faith, hope, and forgiveness and revolves around the sport of geocaching. It follows two college students who stumble into a kidnapper's deadly game and must face the choices of their past as they work to rescue a Senator's son who has been kidnapped. (Get your copy today!)

Not one to rest after the realization of his dream, Tracy has already begun working on his second
feature film, a Christmas themed movie that he is planning on shooting this winter and releasing
during the 2010 holiday season.

And as they say in the movies, "He lived happily ever after..."

Each year Print Industries of America (PIA) awards printers for excellent, great, fabulous, wonderful, marvelous, print projects. (It doesn’t say all that on the award, but that’s what they mean!)

This year Heritage won an Award of Recognition for the 2007 Noble Foundation Annual Report. The award really goes to the designer, Kathleen Shannon with Third Degree Advertising (not only does Kathleen rock, so does 3rd Degree!) and the writers, editors and in-house photographer from the Noble Foundation. Kathleen and 3rd Degree have collaborated with the Noble Foundation on their past four annual reports, each of which have received multiple awards and recognitions (and were all printed by Heritage!).

Now let’s talk more about this particular design Kathleen did for the Noble Foundation. (We’ve got several items to blog about for the Foundation, they do a lot of cool stuff!)

Kathleen used a suede paper in two colors for the cover and wrap.

So, what do you know about the Noble Foundation? Here are some facts about this fabulous organization….

The Noble Foundation was established in 1945 by Lloyd Noble. Although he made his fortune in the oil business, he understood that the land and agriculture would be important long after the oil and gas were gone. Early programs at the Noble Foundation helped farmers and ranchers practice better land stewardship and resource conservation. Today, the Foundation has grown to include three operating divisions – Plant Biology, Forage Improvement and Agricultural – which work together to move science from the laboratory to the field.

The Ardmore-based organization employs 370 people, including 85 Ph.D. scientists from more than 25 different countries. It is Oklahoma’s largest private foundation and ranks No. 44 in the United States. Its plant science research covers the spectrum from the genetic level through field-level testing of new crops for eventual commercialization. Through an agricultural consultation program, the foundation also works directly with more than 1,600 Oklahoma and Texas farmers and ranchers to assist them in meeting their goals. This service is provided to the farmers at no cost.

The AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) presents the Fellow award, which recognizes mature designers who have made a significant contribution to raising the standards of excellence in practice and conduct within their local or regional design community as well as in their local AIGA chapter. The areas of education, writing, leadership and reputation, as well as the practice of design are given equal consideration in measuring significant contribution. This year Sarah Sears, Principal at S Design Inc, (click here to find out more about them) was selected to receive the AIGA Fellow award. This is a lifetime achievement award for her contribution to the design community. Congrats Sarah! We’re so proud of you.

Recently we had the opportunity to print a way-cool invitation that was designed by S Design. The invitation was actually for an event that our friends at Clampitt Paper were hosting.

Clampitt (along with Sappi & Neenah Papers) hosted the Clampitt Bowling Classic (super cute idea) at Red Pin Bowling Lounge, and invited designers and customers to attend.

The retro invite was designed by S Design, and was printed here at Heritage.

I give this design 5 stars…no wait, to use bowling terms it’s a 5-bagger. (Yeah I’m not gonna lie to you, I looked that term up on a bowling website, and it means five strikes in a row. Thank God for the Internet.)

August Ad Club

Today Heritage had the pleasure of sponsoring the Oklahoma City Ad Club meeting. (We met at Will Rogers Theatre. I can't say that fast, can you? I say "Will Wogers" evewy time!)

The Ad Club hosts monthly meetings to promote professional development and networking opportunities. The group is made up of people from all corners of the advertising/communications industry, from advertising to marketing, broadcasting, public relations, event planning, graphic design and more. (YES, I copied that from their website, duh!)

Today's guest Speaker was Dirk Fowler with f2 Design out of Lubbock, Texas. Two words: He rocks.

He's designed concert posters for tons of clients including: Wilco, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, and No Doubt (Dirk you can send me one of those, it won't hurt my feelings!) I think what I liked most about what Dirk had to say was that he knew what he wanted, and he went after it! He made his dreams become reality. Inspiring.

We also gave away a delicious Braum's Ice Cream party basket as the door prize. Cuz who doesn't LOVE Braums? It was filled with yummy Braum's treats, and had a $20 gift card for the winner to purchase ice cream! My hope was the that the winner would use the treats and have a ice cream party in their office....that's what I would do if I won, because I love my co-workers!

Each year about this time, OC (Oklahoma Christian University) produces their Parent View magazine.

The magazine is a great resource for parents that gives them important information on topics such as: the admission process, scholarships, housing options, federal loans, and financial aid. Speaking as a former Oklahoma Christian student, I encourage parents to get more involved in finding out what the SCHOOL is doing and less about what their child is doing! (But that’s just me.)

I wish we could add a feature on the blog where you can actually feel the paper & texture. Is that possible? Kind of like a scratch-n-sniff sticker? Try this, just stop by the information desk at OC and ask them if you could feel one of the Parent View magazines….hmmm, yeah, maybe you shouldn’t try that.

This is the Xante' Digital Press (you have to say that in a really deep announcer voice, it just works better that way.) What the Xante' means to you is COST SAVINGS! In the past buying a short run four-color envelope was a little pricey. That's not the case now. You can buy plain ol' envelopes and we'll run them through the Xante' and bam...four-color envelopes! Oh...and did I mention turn time? When you print and convert an envelope you are looking at 7 to 10 working days, BUT with the Xante', you could reasonably have your envelopes back in 2 to 3 days. Yes, you heard me right, 2 to 3 days!

So you’ve seen the EASY button, right? Well… we’ve got the EASIER button. (Just remember you saw it here first!)

This little do-dad is so cool.

It’s a light up USB smart button. What does that mean? Well, I’ll tell ya. Let’s say you’re launching a new website, introducing a new product/service, or maybe have a link to a web application that you want your customers to see. You call HERITAGE at 800.654.1713 and order some smart buttons with your logo on them and then program the buttons to link to the URL you want your customers to access. You send the buttons out to your customers... it's that easy!

This week we’re featuring a business card we did for our customer, Jameson Management (click here for the scoop on this way-cool company!) Jameson asked us to find a paper to compliment the design of this one of a kind business card for their customer, Jackson DDS.

Together we chose “Skin” a paper from Curious Collection that feels like baby skin! Skin printed remarkably like a gloss sheet only without the hard surface – the metallic gold and the grays now have a visual smoothness.

I “flipped out” when I saw this business card! (Okay yes…that’s a play on words, stay with me…) From the front and back it looks like a normal business card, right? Oh NO my friend, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill business card. The perforated edge on the front of the card invites you to pop that card open and see what’s inside! When opened it says “Advanced Cosmetic & Reconstructive Dentistry – Where your inner smile becomes reality.”

Business cards are a quick first impression—they should adhere to your branding standards, clearly define your contact information, and grab the customers’ attention in a few brief seconds...I think this card meets the mark!

In 1974 Dave DeLana purchased a 900 square foot house on Choctaw Street in El Reno, Oklahoma and opened Heritage Print Shoppe. He started with a small duplicator press and two letter presses.

Well....

a lot has changed in those 35 years; we outgrew that little house and our name!

Heritage Solutions now resides in a 70,000 square foot building off Holloway Drive in El Reno, and we’ve got too many pieces of printing equipment to list! (Yes, we were known as Heritage Press for YEARS...we'll cover that in another blog post. Stay tuned.)

We are still known for our quality printing capabilities, but we’ve added many other solutions, including; fulfillment, kitting, binding, web hosting, web development, promotional products, digital printing and variable data solutions. I know what you're thinking..."WOW!"

Heritage Solutions isn’t “just a manufacturer.” We’re not “just a printer” either. Heritage Solutions is a service provider. We find solutions for our customers each and every day.
